Handoff is a hidden tax
In the classic model, a design agency produces frames, a development shop estimates those frames, and a project manager translates the gaps. Every ambiguous hover, empty state, and edge case becomes a ticket. The live product is a negotiation, not a decision.
Design engineering collapses that loop. The person shaping the interaction is close to the person shipping the component — often the same person. Weekly demos show the real UI, not a prototype of a future UI.
What we mean by design engineering
Not designers who only polish mockups. We mean production work: accessible components, tokens in code, and a visual system that survives the product’s constraints. The craft is in the details customers touch, not in a slide named Visual Direction v7.
That is why our showcases are live apps, not posters. If it cannot run, it is not done.
When a split still makes sense
If you have a strong internal engineering team and only need positioning and a design system, a design-led engagement can be enough — provided the system is delivered as tokens and components, not a frozen file. If you have no engineering yet, paying two vendors to invent a third process is usually slower than one studio that ships.
